THE WORLD OF EXTREME HAPPINESS

In Chinese, “heaven” means (roughly), “the world of extreme happiness.” I love the intensity of this translation – there’s something beautiful and almost violent about it. “Beautiful and violent” could also describe Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig’s play, the story of a poor Chinese woman desperate to succeed in a changing world. In advertising the show, I wrote copy that reflected this personal and political struggle, one that's rarely reflected on the New York stage.
